Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 3-4-11

The lake is open and ready for fishing! The water is about 5 and a half foot above winter pool (just below summer pool) at this time. It is at 599 The water is clear on the main lake and stained to muddy in the creeks and rivers. The water temperature is in the 40 degree range.

Right now we have only been crappie fishing and they can be caught deep and shallow, anywhere from 2 foot to 20-25 foot on the main lake points. They can be caught on jig and bobber, jig and minnow or minnow and bobber. You can also use whatever you prefer to fish with.

As soon as the other fishing picks up and other species start being caught, or when conditions change, we will update!

Be sure to stay safe out there and it is always a good idea to take someone with you! Good luck out there.

Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 4-29-11

The lake level is 604.19 which is 4.49 feet above summer pool. They expect it to crest by May 5th at 608 and that will be about 8 foot over summer pool. The water temperature is in the upper 50's and the water is stained on the south end of the lake and murky to muddy on the north end and in the backs of the bigger creeks.

The fishing has not been affected by the rising water and we can rate fishing excellent right now for crappie. They are moving up shallow and the males are turning black. We have been catching males shallow by casting jigs to any kind of wood in the water. You can try a slow retrieve and then let your jig fall when you get to the first drop off. We have been picking up some big females sitting in that deeper water using 1/4 ounce jigs and 3 inch twister tails. You can try this technique using either jigs or minnows in 8-20 feet, depending on what part of the lake you are on.

White bass can also be caught right now, some deep, some shallow. When you find them, they are very active and you can catch a bunch of them because they are biting! You can watch your locators on the points on the edges of the creek and river channels.

We have also been picking up large mouth and an occasional walleye. The water coming up could change things in the upcoming days, and once it does come up, all the species of fish will be relating to the flooded vegetation. The bass will be starting to move up and bedding. They can be caught on spinner baits and buzz baits in the weeds. If you like to fish deep, try fishing the deep points with a worm or jig.

Be sure to stay safe out there, with the fast rising water, there is a lot of flowating debris. Sometimes you will actually see big trees and logs floating in the middle of the lake sometimes.

Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 4-22-11

The lake level is 597.47 which is about half way between winter and summer pool. It is raining as we write this and it looks like more rain is on the way, so expect the water level to rise!

Fishing has been excellent up to now for white bass, crappie or walleye.

We've been catching crappie on jigs in deep and shallow water on any kind of wood structure. We've been pitching jigs in shallow water using a bobber or in deep water tight lining or swimming the jigs. Most of our big crappie have been coming out of the deeper water. These crappie are being caught like this all over the lake. If you are not catching any, the best advice we can give you is move around until you find them. They are moving around, they are relating to bait. They are not idle on one spot for very long.

We are catching white bass the same as the crappie, by moving until we find them. The white bass, large mouth bass and walleye are relating to chunk rock, sand and/or pea gravel banks. We have had luck with crank baits, rat-l-traps and 2 jig rigs. We have been catching them on the main lake and in the bigger coves and creeks. They are either right up on the banks or they are hanging out a little bit in 4 or 5 foot of water. Finding where the fish are is a new experience daily, you will need to experiment!

Be sure to stay safe out there and it is always a good idea to take someone with you! Good luck out there.

Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 5-13-11

The lake level is at 607.76 which is a little over 8 foot above summer pool. The water is stained to murky but good for fishing through-out most of the lake right now. The water temperature is in the mid 60's.

Even though we have high water, fishing is very good.

Crappie fishing is excellent and they are spawning. Some are on the beds and the males are black. You can catch them on the main lake and in the coves, on any type of shallow wood and also in the shallow water vegetation. As we reported last time, we have been picking up some big females sitting in that deeper water out in front of these males waiting to move in. You can use either jigs or minnows.

White bass fishing is excellent right now, they can be caught deep and shallow. Try vertical jigging with one ounce mann-o-lures deep on the sandbars, or on the same spots you can try a 2 jig rig using a stop and go retrieve. You can also find white bass right now back in the bigger creeks relating to the more flat, shallow banks. Try using jigs, they are right on the edge of the weeds or even up in the weeds.

Walleye fishing has turned on big time, they can be caught on main lake and secondary points. Look for the mud lines, throw your favorite crank bait, the bandit 600 series is working well, but just about any crank bait, any color will work. Keep in mind that you need to keep moving no matter what kind of fish you are looking for. In other words, cover a lot of water until you find the fish.

The bass fishing is also excellent right now, you will find the males and the females back in the coves relating to beds and structure. Even though all these fish can be caught deep and shallow right now, you will still find a lot of the females are still holding on main lake and secondary points a little deeper.

Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 6-3-11

The lake level is still about 8 foot above summer pool at 608.14. The water is in the mid 7o's and stained to clear. On the north end it is murky.

White bass can be caught deep and shallow. Watch your locators on the deep sandbars close to the channel breaks where it drops off into the creeks and the rivers. Try jigging spoons, 2 jig rigs or crank baits.

Walleye can still be caught using a crank bait or a jig and night crawler around the vegetation on the points. Some walleye may even be found back in the creeks relating to the green willow bushes.

Largemouth bass are relating to the vegetation and also on deep points.

If you like to catch catfish, right now is your best bet because they are spawning. Look for these fish around any rocky rip rap area's.

Crappie fishing has slowed down, if you want to try for them you can still catch some, they are relating to the vegetation and down trees.

Trolling crank baits on the flats and varying your depth can help you locate fish if you are having a tough time. It has been a bit slower out there. We are thinking optimistic by saying it will improve. The new shad fry have hatched and soon the fish will be relating to them, so watch for schooling white bass on the surface.

Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 7-29-11

The lake level is at 604.79 which is 5.09 above summer pool. The water temperature is in the mid 80's. The water is stained to clear all over the lake.

The fishing has been as HOT as the weather! We have been catching crappie, white bass, walleye, largemouth, buffalo, drum perch, yellow bass and even some catfish by fishing deep water. We are using one ounce mann-o-lure jigging spoons on the edges of sandbars where they drop off into the creek and river channels. You can look for them on your locator by looking for the large schools of bait fish and fish on the bottom. Once you find this on the locator you can drop the once ounce mann-o-lure jigging spoon and vertical jig for these fish. Jig and minnow or just a plain two jig rig will also work. Some people are also using crank baits. The seagulls are here and they will tell you when the schooling fish are on the surface. When you see them flying tight circles and diving all at the same time in the same area you can bet you will have a school of white bass chasing shad to the surface. When the wind is blowing you can also find all species of fish on the sand bar flats and a two jig rig will work good to catch them.

Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 7-15-11

The lake level stands at 606.6 which is 6.9 foot above summer pool and falling. The water temperature is in the low 80's and is clear to stained.

Fishing is improving even though the weather is hot. You can catch a lot of fish out there.

White bass fishing is good late in the evening for the top water schooling fish. You could also find these fish through-out the day. We are also catching white bass in the middle of the day by fishing sandbars and the drop offs with one ounce jigging spoons. You can also try using the 2 jig rig in these area's by throwing it out and then cranking it slow using a stop and go retrieve. It won't be long and we will be seeing lots of seagulls out there, we are starting to see a few already. If you keep an eye out as to where the seagulls are feeding on shad, you will be able to locate these schools of white bass easily.

Largemouth Bass fishing is just about as good as it gets. You can catch them deep using deep water baits, and also shallow around any kind of structure like the willow trees or smart weeds using your favorite top water technique. If you do not catch them shallow, back off and try main lake points where the sandbars meet the creek and river channels. Try a jig or plastic worm on the deep spots.

Walleye have slowed down, but they can still be caught deep and shallow. The shallow fish can sometimes still be found in the weeds, try using a shallow running crank bait, jig and worm or jig and minnow. If you do not find them shallow you can try 2 jig rigs or jigging spoons out on the drop offs, they are relating to the edges.

For crappie, try any kind of lay downs or wood structure in the water, vary your depth and move around until you find some. A jig and minnow or minnows are producing good on the crappie.

If you want to catch some catfish, the catfish bit is good right now. You can use whatever your favorite catfish bait might be.

Blue gill fishing is always good on Lake Shelbyville around the rip rap by marina's boat ramps or anywhere you find chunk rock. Try setting a bobber 2-3 foot deep, bait it with your favorite bait and you will stay busy catching a lot of small blue gill.

Lake Shelbyville Il Fishing Report for 10-04-11

The lake level stands at 599.7 which is exactly summer pool. The water is clear to stained with the temperature between 60 and 70 degrees.   The fall colors are here and the fishing is as good as it can get! The last couple years we had a lot of rain that kind of messed up our fall fishing. This year things are in excellent condition!
We are catching mostly White Bass deep and shallow by throwing 2 jig rigs on sand and gravel banks. We are finding a lot of these fish on the main lake and also back in the coves and creeks.
While fishing for White Bass we are picking up Large Mouth Bass, Crappie and an occasional Walleye. If you want to specifically target White Bass, pay attention mostly to the shallow banks. If you find the shad, you will see the White Bass busting the shad. You can then use the 2 jig rig or whatever your favorite shallow White Bass bait might be. If you are looking for Crappie, they are sitting deep on the points (anywhere from 10-25 foot) and also shallow on any kind of wood (lay-downs/stumps) structure.
The best advice we can give is to keep moving around until you find the size fish you are looking for. We are catching a lot of Crappie, especially a lot of small Crappie, but you can find the big ones out there if you just keep moving and looking. We are using jigs, but mionnows will also work. If you would like to catch Large Mouth Bass, the bite is good! They are on the points and drop offs. You can cath them deep and shallow using top water baits, crank baits and also worms and jigs. Walleye are being caught on crank baits, jig and night crawler and jig and minnow. You will find them out on the main lake chunk rock and gravel points and you are best off favoring these area's
where the wind is blowing in. We also will mention that if you like to fish deep with the one ounce jigging spoons you most certainly will be able to catch fish this way right now. You can find these deep fish 15 to 25 foot deep (depending what part of the lake you are on), with your locator and then drop your spoon down there. If you see fish on the bottom on your locator, you will catch something for sure. All species will hit the jigging spoon. We have been fishing mainly point 3 south, but we know that people are catching them doing the same things up north also. Until next time, don't miss out on some fantastic fall fishing!
